Biography

Jungwha Jung was born in 1956 in Gwangju (Korea) and graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille (France) and the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg (Germany). Since 1995 she has lived and worked in Seoul and Cologne

In 1986, she began her work by participating in the festival “Video and Multimedia/Soungui Kim and Her Invitees”. In 1994, she had her first solo exhibition in Korea at Tho Art Space Gallery with “Time and Perspective”, a video and mixed-media installation.

Using various media such as installation, video, photography, film and performance, Jung attempted to construct a complex space and time with a mixture of multiple periods. This includes installation works that engage the actual given space and viewers based on a spatio-temporal composition, works that deal with the modernisation of Seoul, and works that interpret literary works in a philosophical way and deconstruct them into different genres.

She was a founding professor of the Department of Photography and Art at Sunchon University from 1996 to 2000, and a professor at Korea National University of Arts from 2000 to 2022.
